Government Legislative Commission approves a draft law aimed to improve state monitoring of nuclear energy safety following discussions

The draft Law on Amendments to Article 40 of the Federal Law on Environmental Protection was developed by the Federal Agency for Atomic Energy (Rosatom) in fulfilment of point 2 of the List of Presidential Instructions of  June 20, 2011.  

The draft law aims to improve state monitoring of environmental safety with regard to nuclear installations, sources of radiation and the storage of radioactive materials, substances and waste. The document will complement the safety standards set out in Federal Law No. 347-FZ of November 30, 2011 On Amendments to Certain Legislative Acts of the Russian Federation to Regulate the Safety of the Use of Nuclear Energy.

Article 40 of Federal Law No. 7-FZ of January 10, 2002 On Environmental Protection proposes including provisions aimed at strengthening the requirements regarding the deployment, design, construction, upgrading, putting into operation and operation of radiation sources and storage facilities for radioactive materials, substances and waste.

The draft law will be considered at a Government meeting.
